Safeguard Taiwan and Say NO to China!
"INDEPENDENT TAIWAN" , "SAY NO TO CHINA"

We are independent and self-supported organisation and we do not accept any funding from political bodies. Placards, flags and banners will be provided however you may feel free to bring your own. (歡迎自行攜帶標語與旗幟)

2. FAPA-UK hopes to avoid a repeat of events in 1999, when police cracked down on peaceful protest. We want public and media attention to be on the issue of Taiwan, not on the right to protest. Like our past events, we have formal authorization from the Scotland Yard. We do not welcome any protesters who show no respect to the public order and British Laws.

3. This activity aims to raise the awareness of the Taiwan issue in the British public. Our focus is to the British general public via international Medias (not Chinese ones). We would like to recruit students who major in English, English Literature, Classics, Law, and International Relations to join our "campaign division".

A Popularly Circulated Open Letter in the Internet

>> Subject: Fwd: [TAAatlanta] Concerns of an Ordinary Mother

Concerns of an Ordinary Mother
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

To whom it may concern

First of all, thank you for taking the time to read this letter!!

I am a mother living in Taiwan one of the ordinary mothers in Taiwan. Like most other mothers, all I know is to do the best I can to give my children a happy life ------ a life to live with confidence and dignity. This is what my mother taught me, and what I, in turn, teach my children.

On this island of Taiwan we are living a peaceful life and breathing freely under the blue sky. And we cherish this land that nourishes us. We have no ambition at all to conquer any other piece of land, nor have we any desire to pry into another style of life.

Unfortunately, one of our neighbors, China, a sister in whose veins runs the same blood as us, claims sovereignty over this land that nourishes us, and demands our admission that Taiwan is a part of China despite the fact that the both parties have completely different systems, cultural background and institutions. China forces us to accept the logic of her thinking, and will not take No for an answer.

China is posing to pass the Anti-Secession Law by the end of March, intending to use legal means to confine Taiwan (the country my children and I live in) to unification with China without any autonomous development. Alternatively, the only choice left for us would be war.

As a mother, the last thing I would want for my children is to see them living in the shadow of war. But, tell me, my dearest reader, if I compromise and choose to accept the Anti-Secession Law simply out of a fear of war, how am I going to teach my children to have faith in human dignity, or in the value of democracy and freedom?

It is now the 21st century, and most parts of the world are already enjoying some degree of democracy. This is particularly meaningful to us here in Taiwan because we have spent the past fifty years transforming a society under totalitarian rule into one that embraces openly the universal values of democracy at the price of many precious human lives. I often proudly tell my children that the lives of our ancestors were sacrificed for a just cause, their blood shed for the democracy and freedom we now enjoy. I teach my children that democracy and freedom is the only choice for human beings, and that human rights and dignity are inherent ideals. This reflects the common will of all inhabitants on this island, and therefore cannot be taken away.

But, tell me, my dearest reader, what would be your choice if you were a mother in Taiwan? Would you choose not to teach your children right from wrong when you were under the threat of nearly a thousand missiles and an illogical legal pressure (the Anti-Secession Law)?

In 1852, an Indian tribe chief named Seattle wrote the following sentence in his letter to the American government:
"The water that moves in the brooks is not water but the blood of our ancestors".

Very well said. Formosa/Taiwan, the green motherland that has nourished my mothers mother, my mother, my children, and myself is not just any island. Through her runs the blood of our ancestors. It is sacred to us. My ancestors safeguarded this piece of land, my mother has safeguarded this piece of land, and my children and I will continue to do so.

This is our mission. But, in the meantime, we are being held hostage by missiles, and intimidated into saying nothing against the unreasonable demands of the upcoming Anti-Secession Law. But, dearest reader, you could speak up for what you believe in. Please give your best wishes to Taiwan, and pray for me that:

One day my children will enjoy freedom from the threat of Chinese missiles;

One day my children will be able to make decisions based on free will to decide the fate of their own nation;

One day all human beings in the world will also have such rights;

And that one day every mother will proudly teach her children that justice is the only way to God!

Thank you again for your patience in reading this letter.

Sincerely yours

A mother from Taiwan
March 2nd, 2005
Before China passes the Anti-Secession Law

Subject:Statement by the World United Formosans for Independence - the United States Headquarters in Response to Singapore Foreign Minister's Speech at the UN General Assembly.
October 2, 2004

On September 24, 2004, at the 59th session of the UN General Assembly in New York, Singapore Foreign Minister George Yeo told world leaders, "The push towards independence by certain groups in Taiwan is most dangerous because it will lead to war with mainland China and drag in other countries. At stake is the stability of the entire Asia-Pacific region."

In response to Mr. Yeo's reprehensible statement, the World United Formosans for Independence - the United States Headquarters (WUFI-U.S.A.) issues the following statement condemning his deliverance of such erroneous information to world leaders.

Mr. Yeo has conveniently ignored the fact that China has long been the aggressor toward Taiwan, as evidenced by China's deployment of more than 600 missiles targeted at Taiwan. He neglected to inform the world leaders that Taiwan has long adhered to the United Nation's Universal Declaration of Human Rights in giving its citizens freedom of religion, association and political activities, which his own country has yet to do.

Mr. Yeo was also silent on the fact that Taiwan has been assisting his country on fighter-pilot training and supplying necessary military equipments to defend his country against external threats. Mr. Yeo's hypocrisy degrades Singapore's national dignity and damages the harmonious relationship between Taiwan and Singapore.

WUFI-U.S.A. hereby denounces Mr. Yeo, Foreign Minister of Singapore, for showing such bias in order to appease the world's largest authoritarian regime - China. We urge that the government of Singapore clearly recognize Taiwan's independence and sovereignty. Taiwanese people have the right to self-determination and to establish their own independent nation.

The government of Singapore should discipline Mr. Yeo for his inappropriate comments, apologize to the people of Taiwan, and continue to work with Taiwan to facilitate trade in the Asia-Pacific region as well as to maintain peace and stability of that region.

WUFI - U.S.A.

Subject:Film Appreciation Day, organised by TWAUK.

    Dear Friends,

I hope that this message finds you well.

Firstly we would like to thank you all for a thoroughly enjoyable evening at the TWAUK Dinner on 6th March. I'm sure that you will all agree that much fun was had singing, drinking and eating that evening!

TWAUK is planning to hold a Film Appreciation Day between 2pm and 5:30pm on 3rd April at the Golders Green Trinity Church. The film we are showing is called 'Infernal Affairs' and was first shown in South East Asia in 2002.

Directed by Andrew Lau and Alan Mak, Infernal Affairs is a tense thriller featuring Hong Kong superstars Andy Lau and Tony Leung. The film follows the parallel lives of Ming (Lau), a cop who secretly reports to ruthless Triad crime boss Sam (Eric Tsang); and Yan (Leung), an undercover police officer who poses as a Triad member in Sam's gang. For Yan, the years of living in the criminal underworld have taken their toll, and he longs to return to regular police duty. However, the only person who knows Yan's true identity is his mentor Superintendent Wong (Anthony Wong), also the unsuspecting superior of Ming. When Wong's officers come face to face with Sam's gang, both leaders realize there are moles in their midst. Soon Yan and Ming must track each other down, leading to an inevitable confrontation.

Unlike many contemporary Hong Kong films, Infernal Affairs steers clear of over-the-top action in favor of a more stylized and subdued story that builds on emotional and psychological tension. Leung is riveting as the undercover cop who desperately wants a normal life, while Lau instills his corrupt character with confidence and charm that mask his deep inner conflict. These two stellar turns are ably supported by veteran actors Wong and Tsang, along with Sammi Cheng and Kelly Chen. A huge blockbluster in Asia, Infernal Affairs is a landmark of Hong Kong cinema that deserves the same status abroad.

After the film, we will be holding a group discussion about the main themes of the movie, we welcome everyone to join us. There will be no fee for existing members and a 1 pound entrance fee for non-members. Payment will be taken at the door.

We hope to see you all there!

    Many Thanks,

    Request for Proposal

Museum Planning and Development Management Consultant.

National Palace Museum (TAIWAN) Request for Proposal of Museum Planning and Development Management Consultant.

Founded nearly eighty years ago, the National Palace Museum (NPM) in the Republic of China is one of the most prominent cultural institutions in the world. Renowned for its treasured collections of Chinese art and culture, the Museum attracts over two million international and local visits annually. The Government of the Republic of China aims to enhance the quality of resources for Chinese art enthusiasts from around the world by reinforcing the mission of the NPM within the global art network. In that spirit, it has decided to expand the Museum's current scope by constructing a new NPM Southern Branch in the city of Taibao, Chiayi County.

The collection and exhibitions of the NPM Southern Branch will encompass Asian cultures and artistic traditions in a broad yet integrated perspective. The planning of the new branch includes not only the construction of the museum itself, but also the extension of affiliated surrounding facilities. In so doing, the Southern Branch will bring together museum exhibitions with research of Asian artifacts, performing arts and programs, popular recreation and entertainment, garden and scenic spaces, and other creative enterprises to become a multi-functional and integrated "Museum Campus". Establishing the Southern Branch will introduce a new pan-Asian dimension to the historical National Palace Museum, with its core collection representing the heritage of China's imperial collecting over the centuries. It will thus present a modern arena for the diverse cultural exchanges in Asia. Furthermore, the NPM Southern Branch will emerge as an important cultural venue in the new era, as it brings exquisite Chinese art objects and vibrant Asian historical artifacts into the everyday cultural experience of the public it serves.

This open selection for Museum Planning and Development Management Consultant seeks an international consulting team of professionals to participate in this challenging process of defining and developing the National Palace Museum Southern Branch. The Museum Campus development is an inquiry undertaken by a preeminent historical institution to reinterpret its role, as well as an exercise in creative planning. Therefore, the prospective consulting team should demonstrate substantial experience in museum planning, including familiarity with collection-based museum operations and practices, a visionary approach to the cultural legacy it represents, as well as an expertise in the development aspect of the project.

The deadline of submitting proposal is 5th January, 2004.

Subject:Taiwanese Collegian condemns Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao for advocating the use of force against Taiwan.

Taiwanese Collegian condemns Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao for advocating the use of force against Taiwan.

In an interview to Washington Post on November 23rd, 2003, China's Premier Wen Jiabao made several self-contradictory statements. One of the most obvious one was his emphasis on China's determination to use military force to enforce its illegitimate claim over Taiwan while stating to the reporters, "[China's] policy toward Taiwan is a clear-cut one. It is peaceful reunification and one country, two systems.... The Chinese people will pay any price to safeguard the unity of the motherland." One does not have to be an expert to logic to know that the coexistence of military force and peace is impossible. In addition, Wen provided his statements to the western press while his military cohorts warned Taiwan that "China was not concerned that foreign investment might drop or that its development would be set back several years, its soldiers might die, its relations with third countries be affected or that people and property in the Asia-Pacific region would be damaged by a war" (Washington Post Foreign Service. Thursday, December 4, 2003; Page A25).

As the Chinese Communist Party's number-three leader and the person who runs the Chinese government, it is time for Wen Jiabao to take some responsibilities for his public statements and familiarize himself with the activities and the trend of the international community. Not only it is impossible for China to "Develop democracy" while keeping its one-party dominated system, it will also be difficult for China to associate itself with the industrialized western democracies if it attacks its peaceful neighbor. Wen also needs to realize his demand on President George Bush to deter Taiwan's democratic movements is not only ludicrous but also preposterous. While United States's troops are in Iraq fighting to establish democracy and freedom, the self-absorbed Chinese leader is asking the US to also dissuade its long time ally to stop the process that only comes natural to any fully consolidated democracy. His demand not only undermines the principles and values that the United States has always been standing for, it also shows his lack of sincerity to his promise to "Develop democracy" in his own country.

In this regard, Taiwanese Collegian, the most organized and well connected non-governmental organization among overseas Taiwanese students, issues this statement to condemn the Premier of China for his threat of use terrorist tactics to infringe on the sovereignty of Taiwan, his intentional neglect of the concept of human rights, and his attempt to mislead the world community to believe that democracy was on his agenda as the leader of his country. The Taiwanese Collegian also urges those who value freedom and democracy to voice against China's totalitarian regime and the threat China poses to the peace of the Asian Pacific region. The democracy on Taiwan needs to be preserved. The future of Taiwan needs to be determined by the Taiwanese people, not by a country that is known for terrorizing its own citizens and menacing in its region of the world.

    Ketty W. Chen, Spokesperson

    The Taiwanese Collegian

    Dear Members,

TWAUK and TAIUK would like to thank you all for your tremendous support at the Food Fete in Parsons Green on 25th October. The fete was a huge success and it was with great reluctance that everyone had to retire home and the event had to come to an end.

Just as we have packed away our dishes, pots and saucepans, TWAUK has already begun organizing out next social event! Following the fantastic time we had at the British Museum last year, we have decided to arrange another outing to The Tate Britain Art Gallery.

Tate Britain was founded by the late Sir Henry Tate. The Museum itself is recently refurbished and houses a number of the world's finest paintings and sculptures. It has a number of Impressionist paintings and is most well known for its collection of paintings by Turner and Rex Williams.

We will be holding guided tours on the 16th and 23rd November. People wishing to come along should arrive at Pimlico Tube Station(Victoria Line) at 2:15pm.

There will be no fee for existing members. Family of Members should pay 3 pounds, and for all other people wishing to come the charge will be 5 pounds. Please make cheques payable to TWAUK at 2 The Circle, Mill Hill, London NW7 3DX, Tel: 020-89593752, E-mail: mollygem@hotmail.com

Page 23, Your Guide To Our Funeral Services, Dignity - Caring Funeral Services:

"If a now or existing headstone is to be used, the engraving can be done relatively quickly. However, it may take up to six months before the headstone may be placed on the grave, as the ground needs to settle."

These are the practical considerations to be taken into account when someone dies. But in terms of becoming dead, can it be dealt with in a similarly pragmatic way?

Ways to Die takes such a direct approach presenting:

instructions for suicide; pop-culture suicide; a house on fire; causes of death on generations of an extended family tree; children committing suicide; a memorial to those who die of natural causes.

Jenny Lu's video "7 basic ways to commit suicide" confronts death in the most direct way. In a style reminiscent of an airhostess presenting a safety demonstration, Jenny Lu delineates foolproof methods to take your own life.

Lu's video ultimately questions whether the artist should take responsibility for their own work and the influence it may have on others.

Carol Ho's sculptures of children are based on the Columbine High School massacre in 1998, and a series of copycat episodes that happened later in the US. These reminded her of the thin line between reality and fantasy; the gruesome and ambiguous messages behind the killings shook the conventional positive perceptions of children and childhood. Ho's sculptures mix violent imagery with a playful and aesthetic use of material - bright red plooms of polystyrene forming exit wounds from cartoon-like mdf figures shooting themselves.

John Hanson is showing an office ceiling panel with a peg-letter memo for 'all those who die of natural causes.' The panel and letters merge in the mushroom-magnolia spectrum of decaying white plastic and paint.

"I've noticed that I often say 'Thank you' twice... but I'm not sure I'm doubly grateful... Tautology. Clarification. Procrastination... I guess I'm after some kind of confirmation - confirmation of what is supposed to be obvious."

Lee Maelzer's painting of a house on fire both dramatises and faithfully records the event, as in a news photograph. The perfect composition and low horizon serve to highten the viewer's helplessness (or voyeurism). We are aware that if someone is in this fire, they are not coming out.

Richard McRae has produced a slide show of text on four Mac Classic computers and a printed family tree.

Each slide show uses a different transition time between pages of the text so that what is seen between all four screens is a random collection of statements. The texts are a combination of the names of his ancestors; descriptions of their personalities; and details of how they loved, lived and died. When seen together the four screens never stop generating myths.

The family tree charts the death for each ancestor. Many were lucky and died of old age. Others were not. Some died young; some in horrible ways.

One or two died in the most ridiculous of ways. One was crushed by bread, some died in a toilet and a few others were killed by an insect of one sort or another.

Richard Paul's sign "Way to go, John Belushi" lists the probable ingredients of Belushi's fatal overdose on a perspex board reminiscent of cinemas and motels. The actor becomes the subject of tabloid prurience - he lives and dies excessively so we don't have to.

'Ways To Die' is curated by John Hanson and Richard Paul

The 228 Musical Memorial Services is held in commemoration of the spiritual scars left behind by the 228 incident 50+ years ago and, most of all, for hoping that the forgivable-but-not-forgettable lessons of Taiwan's history will help the people of Taiwan respect, trust, and forgive one another.

The service will be held at :

    Bloomsbury Central Baptist Church,
    235 Shaftesbury Avenue,
    London WC2H 8EL

    Tel: +44 020 72400544 ; Fax +44 020 78366843
    (Nearest Tube station:
Tottenham Court Road on Northern & Central Line)

We would be delighted and honored if you will be able to attend and look forward to seeing you.
